flexible packaging technology experienced two biggest leaps from 1992 to 1996 and from 1996 to today. In the early 1990s, there were basically four kinds of flexible packaging materials: nylon, PVDC (polyvinylidene chloride), EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer resin) and metallized composite film. However, consumers demanded fresh and delicious food with better quality covered with special interface mortar, which prompted the packaging industry to develop more advanced packaging solutions

today, consumers can enjoy food protected by up to 15 layers of composite film. Polypropylene and polyester are often used as the base film of high barrier composite film. The base film is compounded into multilayer film, and there are different manufacturing processes and technologies. The skill of selection is to weigh the comprehensive proportion between cost and performance. Many companies choose coextrusion process, some choose multi-layer bonding, while others use coating method, which largely depends on the end use. For example, if a packaging material processing plant that promotes production, trade, steel blending and development only needs films with general barrier properties, they may use polyethylene as the base film and coated with PVDC or EVOH. This is a very economical and effective method

the structural composition of packaging is related to many factors: the number of rolls to be compounded, the length of each roll, the physical properties that must be achieved, whether the final packaging adopts longitudinal forming filling or cold sealing, whether zippers are intended to be installed on the packaging bags, and so on

today, high-quality barrier films or high barrier flexible packaging are prominently used in the retail food market. Compared with the United States, Europe and Japan are more likely to accept high barrier packaging. Consumers in Western Europe and Japan have a much stronger preference and appreciation for high-quality food, and consuming food is to a large extent a social activity. In North America, food consumption pays more attention to "I need fast, I want hot, I want fresh"

current market situation: other fields using high barrier flexible packaging include medical devices, drugs and tobacco, but the application of this packaging form in the North American tobacco market is significantly reduced

the pet food packaging market is developing rapidly. One of the main reasons for the application of barrier flexible packaging in this field is to prevent infection. Many barrier flexible packaging forms have high barrier properties of metal foil and metallized film, and they are now equipped with resealable zippers
